There are just some pieces that are just so practical that it’s basically a sin not to have them in your closet; the cardigan coat is one of them. Some people may call them a sweater coat, and I’ve heard them referred to a “coatigan”; but whatever you want to call them, they’re a must have.
Winter Wardrobe Staple: The Cardigan Coat
Now I know I may sound a bit dramatic saying that, but truthfully they are INCREDIBLY versatile. When it first starts to cool down in the fall I end up wearing them as a jacket. As the days get colder, I layer a warmer coat over them. I’ve worn cardigan coats over dresses, with leggings, and with jeans. For a more defined silhouette, belt the cardigan; or leave it unbelted for a more drapey look. I will say, however, that when I look for a cardigan coat, I always try to find ones with a good fabric content. I personally find that too much acrylic in the blend means that it will pill and look worn rather quickly. Since these pieces are long, the get rubbed against seats, and by your handbag. So before you make the purchase – check what it’s made of.
I can pretty much guarantee you that this is not the first coatigan, nor will it be the last, that makes it’s way into my closet; in fact, I was even wearing one in yesterday’s post. And even knowing I have so many, I’ll still probably finding another one I just HAVE to have. When a piece gets so much wear, it’s not hard for me to take the plunge and buy it.
